Crawford, 31, played in seven games this spring, batting .125 with a stolen base and three RBIs. The injury is not believed to be serious, with Leo Rivas expected to get time at shortstop in Crawford's absence.
The Mariners will open at home against the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday night.
In 157 games last season, Crawford batted .265 with 12 home runs and 58 RBIs, then homered and had four RBIs in 12 playoff games as he helped Seattle to Game 7 of the American League Championship Series.
Over nine major league seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies (2017-18) and Mariners (2019-25), Crawford is a career .248 hitter with 67 home runs and 344 RBIs while winning a Gold Glove in 2020.
Also on Wednesday, Seattle also placed infielder Miles Mastrobuoni (calf strain) and right-hander Bryce Miller (oblique) on the injured list while selecting the contract of catcher Mitch Garver. Catcher Andrew Knizner cleared waivers and elected to become a free agent.
Garver, 35, was with the Mariners for each of the past two seasons and is a career .233 hitter in 651 games over parts of nine major league campaigns.
