Marquette pursues bounce-back effort in meeting with Little Rock
Marquette head coach Shaka Smart is shown during the second half of their game Wednesday, November 5, 2025 at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Marquette beat Southern 100-82. Marquette will look to get back on track Wednesday night when it continues its non-conference slate against Little Rock in Milwaukee.
The Golden Eagles (2-1) were handled by Indiana 100-77 in a neutral-site battle at United Center in Chicago on Sunday.
Chase Ross led Marquette with 19 points while Nigel James Jr. came off the bench to score 16. The Golden Eagles were just 4-for-16 from 3-point range, while Indiana was 14-for-28.
"We knew coming into the game that they had a lot of offensive weapons," Marquette coach Shaka Smart said. "You can't hope they miss. We have to guard the basketball better. We have to have five guys connected as one."
Offensively, Marquette recorded only 10 assists as a team.
"I thought the ball stuck a little bit today. Transition is where we're at our best," Smart said. "When we got to the half-court, there were too many pauses."
Little Rock (1-1) is extending its stay in the city after it faced Milwaukee on Monday, falling 92-72.
Braxton Bayless led the Trojans with 19 points. Johnathan Lawson added 15 and Cameron Wallace 12. Little Rock trailed by just three at halftime and shot 48.2% from the floor for the night.
"We didn't play well enough in the second half to win," Trojans coach Darrell Walker said. "We knew these road games were going to be tough. We'll watch some film and get ready for Marquette."
Little Rock was selected to win the Ohio Valley Conference in the preseason coaches poll.
"I like our team; it's a good group of guys, and they've been fun to coach," Walker said. "It's always our goal to win a conference championship. This year is no different."
