Maryland Terrapins
1. Fear the Journal? The Terps have been trying to break the full court press all year. Just when they thought they had buried all of their ghosts (2006 marks the 20th anniversary of Len Bias' death) the Terps lost Chris McCray in a different kind of way. Then when that story finally died down, the papers were a buzz over Coach Gary Williams as he overtook the legendary Lefty Drissel as Maryland s all-time winning coach.
2. Twerps. The underachieving Terps are 6-8 since losing their leading scorer McCray to academic problems in January. The two-time captain failed to maintain a 2.0 GPA in the Fall semester, a NCAA requirement for senior athletes. Student privacy laws prohibit officials from commenting on specifics, but rumors have it that the Terp was more than a little tardy (apparently Chris was complete no show) to most of his College Park classes.
3. Strawberry Field (Goals) Forever. Despite moving from his more natural shooting guard/small forward position, junior D.J. Strawberry s numbers have improved across the board as he is now sporting a 43.7 field goal percentage and dishing out a team-leading four assists per game. And yes, his father is Darryl. — Shane Igoe
