Max Homa had birdies on two of his first four holes Friday morning to pull even with Scheffler, but a bogey to finish the round put him in a tie for third place at 5 under.
Denmark's 23-year-old Nicolai Hojgaard wrapped up his last three holes of the opening round to sit at 5 under by round's end.
Englishman Danny Willett finished at 4 under, while Ryan Fox of New Zealand sits at 3 under along with Australian Cam Davis.
DeChambeau is scheduled to begin his second round shortly before noon.
England's Tyrrell Hatton was at 3 under when play stopped Thursday night, but he recorded a double-bogey 7 on No. 15 and a bogey at the 18th when play resumed to settle for even-par 72 for the round.
Five-time champion Tiger Woods ended the first round at 1 over, finishing five holes Friday morning before he was slated to start his second round less than an hour later. He had bogeys on two of his last five holes (Nos. 14 and 18) of the opening round.
