Mandatory Credit: Daniel Dunn-Imagn Images Dallas Mavericks guard Dante Exum, who has yet to play this season because of a right knee issue, will have season-ending surgery.
The Mavericks confirmed Exum's season is over on Thursday.
Exum, 30, "has continued to deal with complications from a right knee procedure in the offseason, and it has been determined that a follow-up surgery will be necessary," the Mavericks said. A recovery timeline will be provided by the team following the procedure.
Exum made 13 starts and appeared in 20 games last season, when he sustained a right wrist injury and a fractured left hand. He averaged 8.7 points, 1.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 18.6 minutes.
The Mavericks re-signed Exum to a one-year, $3.3 million contract this offseason to be a backup point guard with All-Star Kyrie Irving currently out because of a torn ACL and D'Angelo Russell also on the roster.
To make room for Exum, Dallas released forward Olivier-Maxence Prosper - a 2023 first-round pick -- by using the waive-and-stretch provision in his contract.
The Utah Jazz selected Exum, a native of Melbourne, Australia, with the fifth overall pick of the 2014 NBA Draft.
For his career, Exum is averaging 6.2 points, 1.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 18.8 minutes in 320 regular-season games (102 starts) for the Utah Jazz (2014-15, 2016-19), Cleveland Cavaliers (2019-21) and Mavericks (2023-25).
