Mandatory Credit: David Banks-Imagn Images As the Mets face a difficult fight for the postseason with two games remaining, New York called up top prospect Dylan Ross on Saturday to help out in the bullpen.
The Mets entered the day tied for the third and final National League wild-card spot with the Cincinnati Reds, who own the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Mets should both teams finish with the same record.
Ross was called up from Triple-A Syracuse, where he notched a 1.69 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 32 innings pitched over 28 relief outings. Across three minor league levels this season, the right-hander had a 2.17 ERA, seven saves and 80 strikeouts in 54.0 innings across 49 relief appearances.
Ross, 25, was drafted by the Mets in the 13th round in 2022. His path to the big leagues was slowed by a 2022 Tommy John surgery that ultimately required a revision procedure that cost him all of the 2023 season.
In a corresponding transaction, the Mets designated right-hander Kevin Herget for assignment ahead of Saturday's game against the host Miami Marlins.
Herget, 34, had a 3.00 ERA over six relief appearances with the Mets this season after starting the season with the Atlanta Braves.
