MLB roundup: Brett Baty bashes grand slam as Mets down Braves

Brett Baty's first-inning grand slam set the pace and the visiting New York Mets held on to beat the Atlanta Braves 8-5 on Monday in the opener of a three-game series.

The Mets ended Atlanta's nine-game home-field winning streak and improved their record against the Braves to 7-4. New York has won six out of seven on its nine-game road trip.

Francisco Lindor went 3-for-5 and added a home run to help the Mets' 12-hit attack. Jared Young had two hits and two RBIs. New York reliever Daniel Duarte (1-0) tossed two hitless innings, and Kodai Senga pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his first career save.

Bryce Elder (8-7) worked five innings and allowed seven runs on 10 hits, ending a string of 18 consecutive games in which Atlanta starters allowed three runs or fewer. Mauricio Dubon hit a two-run single.

Twins 9, Orioles 5

Josh Bell went 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs, and Minnesota held on for a win over Baltimore in Minneapolis.

Ryan Jeffers finished 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs for the Twins, and Austin Martin finished 4-for-5 with a homer, a double and an RBI. Dean Kremer (2-4) beat his former team, which dealt him to Minnesota before the trade deadline. Kremer limited the Orioles to one run on one hit in seven innings with seven strikeouts.

Coby Mayo went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs to lead the Orioles. Trevor Rogers (7-8) allowed two runs on four hits in four innings.

Blue Jays 2, Red Sox 1

Charles McAdoo, recalled from Triple-A Buffalo before the game, hit a solo home run and Toronto held off visiting Boston.

Andres Gimenez added an RBI single for the Blue Jays, who have won three of their past four games. Simeon Woods Richardson (2-7), also promoted from Triple-A on Monday, allowed four hits and a run in three innings of relief. Toronto starter Jameson Taillon left after four scoreless innings due to right forearm discomfort.

The Red Sox, who had been the hottest team in the majors, have lost three in a row. Sonny Gray (14-3) gave up two runs and six hits in six innings.

Phillies 6, Cardinals 5

Edmundo Sosa had two hits and drove in three runs against his old team as Philadelphia prevailed at St. Louis.

Kyle Schwarber collected two hits and two walks and drove in a run for the Phillies. Andrew Painter (2-8) didn't allow a hit until the sixth, and he wound up permitting two runs on two hits in 5 1/3 innings. Jonathan Bowlan pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his first career save.

Alec Burleson had two hits and three RBIs for the Cardinals, and Ivan Herrera added two hits and two runs. Hunter Dobbins (2-3) yielded three runs, one earned, in five innings.
