MLB roundup: Phillies walk off Blue Jays in 12 to avoid sweep

Derek Hill hit a walk-off RBI single to help the Philadelphia Phillies defeat the visiting Toronto Blue Jays 7-6 in 12 innings Sunday, avoiding a three-game sweep.

Kyle Schwarber hit two homers for the Phillies to give him 35 on the season after he was homerless in the prior 17 games.

Philadelphia blew a 5-2 lead by allowing three runs in the eighth to prevent Jesus Luzardo from recording the win after he yielded two runs, four hits and one walk while striking out 12 in seven innings. Caleb Kilian (4-7) was the winning pitcher despite allowing the automatic runner to score in the 12th.

Brett Bateman and Alejandro Kirk each had two of the Blue Jays' 10 hits, with Bateman recording his first major league RBI on a fifth-inning single. Toronto starter Shane Bieber gave up both of Schwarber's homers, allowing five runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Padres 7, Astros 2

Jackson Merrill, Fernando Tatis Jr., Gavin Sheets and Austin Hays homered Sunday night as San Diego won the rubber match of a series between playoff contenders over visiting Houston.

Randy Vasquez (8-6) got his second win of the week, permitting only two hits and two runs in five innings with no walks and a strikeout. He combined with three relievers to retire the last 22 hitters San Diego faced as the Padres stayed a game behind Arizona and Philadelphia, who are tied for the National League's final two wild-card spots.

Cristian Javier (1-3) absorbed the loss, yielding four runs off eight hits and a walk over five innings while fanning two. Houston stayed a half-game ahead of Texas atop the American League West thanks to the Rangers' loss to Baltimore.

Tigers 3, Giants 1 (10 innings)

Pinch hitter Hao-Yu Lee ignited a two-run 10th inning with an RBI single and visiting Detroit completed a highly successful West Coast swing with a victory over San Francisco.

Max Clark added a run-scoring fielder's choice and Tyler Holton threw a scoreless bottom of the 10th for his second save, giving the Tigers a seventh win on a nine-game trip through West Sacramento, Seattle and San Francisco. Kenley Jansen (3-4) earned the win by striking out the side in the ninth.

Rafael Devers and Drew Gilbert had two hits apiece for the Giants, who lost for the seventh time in their last nine games. Giants starter Logan Webb Webb threw eight innings with one run and four hits allowed. He walked one and struck out two.

Rays 4, Mariners 1

Ian Seymour pitched six quality innings as Tampa Bay defeated host Seattle to complete a sweep of their three-game series.

Liam Hicks had a two-run double for the American League-leading Rays, who have won six consecutive games and 15 of their past 19. Seymour (9-3) allowed one run on five hits, walking two and striking out seven. Steven Matz pitched the ninth for his first save of the season.

Seattle starter Emerson Hancock (6-7) gave up two runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings. The right-hander walked one and struck out three while throwing 96 pitches. The Mariners have lost four straight, scoring four runs over that stretch.

Marlins 12, Angels 3

Griffin Conine mashed a 434-foot, two-run home run in a six-run fifth inning and later added a solo shot, leading host Miami past Los Angeles.

Conine and Javier Sanoja each drove in a game-high three runs to help secure a series victory. Miami's Kyle Stowers, an All-Star last year, was removed from the game in the fifth with left hamstring discomfort.

Angels starter Grayson Rodriguez (3-5) gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits and four walks with eight strikeouts in four innings. His ERA sits at 7.20. Jose Siri homered for Los Angeles.

Cubs 10, Royals 2

Matthew Boyd threw seven stellar innings, and Miguel Amaya launched a three-run home run as visiting Chicago breezed past Kansas City.

Boyd (8-1) allowed two runs on five hits while striking out three and walking three in the rubber game for the Cubs, who won their sixth game in seven tries. Alex Bregman and Ian Happ both had three hits and drove in two runs apiece for Chicago, which matched a season-high with 18 hits.

Royals starter Randy Dobnak (2-1) suffered his first loss since Sept. 3, 2021, surrendering four runs on 10 hits across five frames, striking out four and walking one. Starling Marte hit a two-run home run for the Royals, who became the third American League to reach 70 losses.

Athletics 4, Red Sox 3

Max Muncy drove in pinch-runner Donovan Walton with a two-out double in the top of the ninth inning to help the visiting Athletics win the rubber match of a three-game series.

Boston had runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but Nick Sogard grounded into a fielder's choice before Ceddanne Rafaela lined out to left to end the game. Eli White collected three hits and drove in a run for the Red Sox, who were 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Henry Bolte had two hits for the Athletics, who ended Boston's nine-game winning streak with a 7-3 victory Saturday. The A's had lost nine straight games prior to Saturday's win.

Mets 11, Pirates 1

Bo Bichette had five hits and three RBIs and Sean Manaea struck out 11 over seven innings to lead New York to a series victory over host Pittsburgh.

Manaea (4-5) allowed just one run, a solo homer from Jake Mangum, on three hits and did not issue a walk. It was his fourth consecutive quality start allowing two or fewer runs. Luis Robert Jr. drove in four runs in the win, which marked the Mets' fifth in six games.

Pirates starter Jared Jones (2-4) lasted just three-plus innings after allowing eight runs on six hits, three walks and one hit batter.

Nationals 7, Reds 1

Abimelec Ortiz had two hits, including a home run, four pitchers combined on a four-hitter and the host Nationals completed a three-game sweep of Cincinnati.

Will Dion (1-0), one of four players acquired from the Cleveland Guardians in the Foster Griffin trade on Aug. 3, pitched three scoreless innings of relief while allowing one hit to earn the victory. Trevor Williams followed with 2 1/3 scoreless frames, and Jake Bird closed it out. Keibert Ruiz had three hits for Washington, which has won four of five after losing seven straight.

Reds starter Brady Singer (5-11) went six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. He struck out three and walked one.

Braves 2, Yankees 1 (10 innings)

Michael Harris II began the 10th inning by delivering an RBI single as Atlanta prevented a New York three-game sweep

Harris grounded a 2-2 sinker off Paul Blackburn (3-2) into right field to easily score automatic runner Ha-Seong Kim, who pinch ran for Matt Olson. Olson homered to right-center against Cam Schlittler to give Atlanta the lead in the seventh. Schlittler allowed three hits, struck out 11 and did not walk a batter in seven innings.

Trent Grisham hit a tying homer to right-center in the eighth against Didier Fuentes. Raisel Iglesias (1-2) struck out two in the ninth and Tyler Kinley fanned Ryan McMahon to finish a perfect 10th and secure his first save of the season.

White Sox 5, Guardians 3

Colson Montgomery hit a three-run home run to lift Chicago to victory over visiting Cleveland.

Brenton Doyle was 2-for-5 with a double, and Munetaka Murakami and Randal Grichuk added an RBI double apiece in the rubber match for the White Sox, who came alive after a two-hour, 23-minute rain delay that followed the first inning.

Jose Ramirez collected two hits and drove in a run to lead the Guardians.

Brewers 4, Twins 3 (10 innings)

Jake Bauers hit a walk-off single to lift host Milwaukee to a win over Minnesota in the rubber match of the weekend series.

Brice Turang narrowly beat the throw to the plate with a headfirst slide to secure the victory for the Brewers. Bauers and Jackson Chourio hit solo home runs for Milwaukee, which saw starter Jacob Misiorowski strike out nine and allow three runs on four hits over six innings.

Kody Clemens hit a two-run homer to lead the Twins at the plate. Brooks Lee (two hits) also left the yard. Right-hander Yoendrys Gomez (2-2) took the loss out of the bullpen after starter Connor Prielipp lasted five innings and gave up three runs on five hits.

Orioles 10, Rangers 5

Pete Alonso hit a pair of two-run homers among his three hits as Baltimore beat Texas to avoid a series sweep in Arlington, Texas.

Tyler O'Neill slugged a two-run homer and Colton Cowser added a solo blast for the Orioles, who led 7-3 after four innings. Starter Cade Povich surrendered three runs on four hits over three innings before Yaramil Hiraldo (1-0) followed with two scoreless innings to earn the victory,

Brandon Nimmo had a three-run homer and Cam Hauley had two hits for the Rangers, who were 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and had their four-game winning streak snapped. Kumar Rocker (4-9) was hit hard, giving up six runs on seven hits over three-plus innings.

Cardinals 7, Rockies 4

Rookie JJ Wetherholt lined a tiebreaking two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to key a win over Colorado for host St. Louis, which won for the fifth time in seven games to pull back to .500 overall.

Wetherholt finished 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs, while Ivan Herrera had his second career four-hit game and drove in an eighth-inning insurance run for the Cardinals. Alec Burleson hit his 19th homer and Riley O'Brien recorded his 29th save.

Hunter Goodman hit his 34th home run for the Rockies, a solo shot in the eighth against George Soriano that tied the score at 4. Soriano (5-3) blew his seventh save but picked up the victory. Backup catcher Brett Sullivan hit his fifth home run for Colorado, while Tanner Gordon fell to 0-3 this season.

Diamondbacks 4, Dodgers 2

Ketel Marte homered, Eduardo Rodriguez struck out a season-high nine, and host Arizona downed Los Angeles in Phoenix to clinch the season series (7-6) for the first time since 2018.

Rodriguez (11-4) threw a season-high 115 pitches, two short of a career high, while giving up two runs in seven innings. He allowed seven hits and walked two in his eighth quality start of his last 10. Marte hit a two-out, two-run homer in the first inning off Justin Wrobleski (11-4) for the Diamondbacks, 18-9 since July 9.

Andy Pages had two hits and an RBI for the Dodgers, who have lost eight of nine after breaking a seven-game losing streak with a 2-1 win Saturday. Los Angeles scored seven runs in the three-game series.
