NASCAR Season Kicks Off With Pace Car Catching Fire

As if tonight's Sprint Unlimited race at Daytona weren't bad enough (wrecks and mechanical failures have left all of eight cars still on the track), the season-opening exhibition has been delayed further by the pace car catching fire.

That car, a Chevy SS piloted by Brett Bodine, had to pull off the track while the fire team attended to it. (We're told a spare SS is on hand for such emergencies.) Strangely, the fire seemed to be coming from the rear of the car; did the differential explode? Seeing as how Mr. Goodwrench hasn't had a RWD Chevrolet sedan to work on in nearly two decades we wouldn't be surprised.
