[Barbara J. Perenic/Dispatch] The 2028 Women's Final Four shifted from Gainbridge Fieldhouse to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, allowing for a larger crowd as the sport surges in popularity.
"Moving the 2028 Women's Final Four to Lucas Oil Stadium will allow for more access for our fans, and it represents the continued growth of the sport," said Amanda Braun, athletic director at Milwaukee and chair of the Division I Women's Basketball Committee, which voted Monday on the change. "With the interest we have seen, holding the Women's Final Four in a larger venue in Indianapolis is a natural next step."
With the relocation from Gainbridge Fieldhouse, the home of the NBA's Indiana Pacers and the WNBA's Fever, about 13,000 more tickets can be sold. The capacity at Lucas Oil Stadium, the home of the Indianapolis Colts, will be reduced from the approximately 65,000 football capacity by about half.
"We are thrilled to see the Women's Final Four return to an active NFL stadium for the first time in over two decades when it takes the floor in Indianapolis in 2028," said Patrick Talty, president of the Indiana Sports Corp. "This stage not only elevates the experience for student-athletes, coaches and fans but also reflects the remarkable growth and momentum of women's basketball."
Phoenix is set to host the 2026 Final Four, with the 2027 event scheduled for Columbus, Ohio, in traditional basketball venues.
The 2005 Final Four was played at the RCA Dome, the former home of the Colts.
