New York Jets get rid of one of Aaron Rodgers' guys
Tim Boyle source: Getty Images The New York Jets are reportedly releasing quarterback Tim Boyle and signing Seattle Seahawks practice squad quarterback Brett Rypien, according to CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson.
Boyle, a former teammate of Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay, joined the Jets in April on a one-year deal. He was released toward the end of training camp in favor of a practice squad spot, but he was quickly brought up to the active roster after Rodgers’ injury.
Boyle was promoted to full-time starter, replacing Zach Wilson amidst his benching. Hoping the quarterback change would spark the offense, Boyle lasted a combined game and a half as the Jets’ starter. Across three appearances this season, Boyle finished 48-for-77 for 360 yards, one touchdown, four interceptions, and nine sacks. He was pulled for Trevor Siemian midway through Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.
Across both his professional and college career, Boyle has never finished a single season with more touchdowns than interceptions. Boyle threw 13 interceptions to one touchdown over three years at the University of Connecticut. As a professional, Boyle has four career passing touchdowns and 12 interceptions across three teams.
Brett Rypien has started four games in four years, most recently filling in for Matthew Stafford with the Los Angeles Rams this season. Rypien arguably fared worse than Boyle this season. In two starts, he combined for a 47.4 percent completion percentage with one interception.
This quarterback carousel comes amidst reports that Zach Wilson is hesitant to return to starting duties. According to reports from The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the Jets want Wilson to return to the starting role, but Wilson is apprehensive about the change because of a perceived injury risk.
Robert Saleh tried to downplay the report, but did not officially deny it.
