"Occupy Steubenville" Gathers To Support Rape Victim, Call For Coach's Job
Protestors in Steubenville, Ohio, today braved crappy weather to rally at the county courthouse and call for further investigation into an alleged sexual assault. In August a 16-year-old girl, in a state of blackout intoxication, was lugged about by two Steubenville High School football players who were later arrested on rape charges.
Since the summer, the Anonymous-affiliated hacktivist group KnightSec has hacked a football booster's site—which now describes those takeovers as efforts to "terrorize the Steubenville community"—and organized rallies to pressure the Steubenville fuzz to dig further. Other students (including football players) who watched the alleged assaults and later tweeted rape jokes were disciplined only months afterward.
The whole mess hit a nerve, and it appears that hundreds of people turned out in the small town today to support the victim and to decry "corruption." At least one protestor held a sign calling on Reno Saccoccia, Stuebenville High's football coach, to resign.
