Atlanta will receive either a player to be determined or cash in exchange for Gonzales. Pittsburgh also received cash as part of the deal.
On Sunday, the Braves acquired outfielder Jarred Kelenic, infielder Evan White, Gonzales and cash from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for right-handers Jackson Kowar and Cole Phillips.
Gonzales, 31, last pitched on May 28, subsequently landing on the injured list and then undergoing season-ending forearm surgery in August to address a nerve issue. He finished 4-1 with a 5.22 ERA over 10 starts this year.
Over a nine-year major league career, Gonzales owns a 65-49 record and a 4.14 ERA with three complete games over 163 appearances (155 starts).
Gonzales will make $12 million in 2024, the final season of a four-year, $30 million contract. The deal includes a $15 million club option with no buyout for 2025.
