Mandatory Credit: Darren Yamashita-Imagn Images The San Jose Earthquakes have sent midfielder Hernan Lopez to Argentinos Juniors of Argentina's top flight on loan.
The transaction, announced Tuesday, is for the remainder of the 2025 season and includes a purchase option.
Lopez, 24, tallied nine goals with three assists in 37 matches across all competitions since joining San Jose as a designated player in May 2024.
The Argentina native underwent right shoulder surgery in March and has played in only five MLS matches in 2025.
"Hernan has a bright future, but with our roster set since his return from injury, we're sending him out on loan to continue his development with the hope that he'll come back having grown as a player," said Quakes head coach and sporting director Bruce Arena.
Lopez is the great-nephew of the late Diego Maradona, a World Cup champion and FIFA's co-player of the 20th century (alongside Brazil's Pele).
