Rangers crush trio of 2-run HRs, blow out Cubs
Mar 30, 2024; Arlington, Texas, USA; Texas Rangers first baseman Jared Walsh (21) celebrates with Texas Rangers designated hitter Wyatt Langford (36) and Texas Rangers catcher Jonah Heim (28) after hitting a two-run home run during the second inning against the Chicago Cubs at Globe Life Field. credits: Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports Jared Walsh, Adolis Garcia and Josh Jung each belted a two-run homer to propel the Texas Rangers to an 11-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday in Arlington, Texas.
Corey Seager had a pair of RBI singles to highlight his four-hit performance for the Rangers, who were presented with their World Series rings during an on-field ceremony before the game.
Walsh had three hits and scored three runs, Marcus Semien added an RBI single and Garcia added a sacrifice fly.
Cody Bradford (1-0) worked around Dansby Swanson's two-run homer in the second inning to fluster the Cubs. He allowed two runs on three hits, struck out six and walked one in five innings.
Four relievers combined to allow two hits over four scoreless innings to seal the win.
After Chicago claimed a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, Texas countered in its half of the inning. Rookie Wyatt Langford capped a 10-pitch at-bat with a single and Walsh sent a 1-1 changeup from Kyle Hendricks (0-1) over the wall in right-center field. The homer came on Walsh's first at-bat with the Rangers.
Texas doubled its advantage in the third. Seager singled to lead off the inning and Garcia stepped up two batters later and deposited a first-pitch sinker from Crawford over the wall in right-center field. Garcia's homer was his second in as many games, as he belted a solo shot in the Rangers' 4-3 win over the Cubs on Thursday.
Walsh doubled to lead off the fourth inning, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Seager's single to center to give Texas a 5-2 lead.
Hendricks didn't last much longer, permitting five runs on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings to take the loss.
A six-run eighth put the game out of reach for the Rangers, with Semien and Seager each providing an RBI single before Jung belted a mammoth two-run homer off Ben Brown.
