Mandatory Credit: Kevin Sousa-Imagn Images The visiting New York Red Bulls extended their unbeaten streak against Toronto FC to 13 matches with a 1-1 draw in a match north of the border on Wednesday.
The Red Bulls (8-7-4, 28 points) are 9-0-4 in those 13 matches. Toronto (3-10-5, 14 points) is winless in its past four MLS matches.
Toronto goalkeeper Sean Johnson had to be sharp in the first half as New York pushed the pace. In the 10th minute, he denied Emil Forsberg from the penalty area with a point-blank stop.
Mohammed Sofo made it 1-0 Red Bulls in the 20th minute. He pressured Maxime Dominiguez into a turnover near midfield and pushed the loose ball up to Forsberg, who dished it to Lewis Morgan. His shot from the box was stopped by a diving Johnson, but the goalkeeper couldn't get up in time to stop Sofo from tapping in the rebound. Moments later, Morgan left the match with an injury.
Toronto started to get more opportunities as the half progressed, but struggled to convert. None of their six shot attempts reached the target.
In the 30th minute, Theo Corbeanu had one of the host's best chances of the half, but he couldn't get his shot off before New York defender Alexander Hack's sliding tackle pushed the ball away.
They had another chance in the first minute of stoppage time when Alonso Coello spotted Kevin Long for a cross, but the pass missed and hit the outside of the net.
When the Red Bulls couldn't clear a Toronto corner in the 51st minute, Corbeanu netted the equalizer. Coello fed a cross toward the far side for Sigurd Rosted, who headed it to the middle and Corbeanu then headed it in from just above the goal area.
New York had a chance to regain the lead in the 58th minute when Raheem Edwards fired one on target from just inside the box, but Johnson (4 saves) got his right hand up to push the ball over the crossbar.
