Mandatory Credit: Jordan Godfree-Imagn Images The Boston Red Sox continued remaking their rotation on Thursday, acquiring right-hander Johan Oviedo in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
In exchange, Pittsburgh received outfielder Jhostynxon "The Password" Garcia and minor league right-hander Jesus Travieso. Two minor leaguers, catcher Adonys Guzman and left-hander Tyler Samaniego, are joining Oviedo in heading to the Boston organization.
Earlier this week, the Red Sox added right-hander Sonny Gray in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Oviedo, 27, was sidelined for the entire 2024 season due to Tommy John surgery, and his recovery was delayed by a lat injury. He returned to the Pittsburgh rotation on Aug. 4 and wound up making nine starts this year, going 2-1 with a 3.57 ERA.
In his only full season as a starter, in 2023 for the Pirates, Oviedo finished 9-14 with a 4.31 ERA in 32 starts. He struck out 158, walked 83 and hit an American League-leading 13 batters with pitches in 177 2/3 innings.
Oviedo broke into the majors with St. Louis in 2020 and was dealt to Pittsburgh in 2022 in a deal that sent Jose Quintana to the Cardinals.
In 81 career games (67 starts), Oviedo owns a 15-26 record, a 4.24 ERA, 321 strikeouts and 176 walks in 361 innings.
Garcia, 22, was one of the Red Sox's top prospects when he arrived in the majors in August. He went 1-for-7 with no RBIs in five major league games with Boston before ending the season back in Triple-A.
Travieso, 18, finished with a combined 3-3 record with a 3.06 ERA in 19 games (16 starts) this year in rookie ball and Class-A.
Guzman, who turned 22 on Thursday, was Pittsburgh's fifth-round draft pick this year. He went 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs in his lone pro game, for Class-A Bradenton.
Samaniego, 26, pitched for four teams in the Pittsburgh farm system this year, topping out at Double-A Altoona. He compiled a 3-3 record with a 3.99 ERA and three saves in 30 games (one start).
