Mandatory Credit: Bob DeChiara-Imagn Images The Boston Red Sox sent outfielder Wilyer Abreu to the 10-day injured list due a strained right calf on Thursday.
The open roster spot allowed Boston to call up highly touted prospect Jhostynxon "The Password" Garcia from Triple-A.
Abreu, 26, was injured Sunday in Boston's 5-3 loss to the Miami Marlins. His move to the IL is retroactive to Monday.
A Gold Glove winner in 2024, Abreu's 22 homers lead Boston and his 69 RBIs share second on the team. His .486 slugging percentage and .811 OPS rank second among Red Sox regulars.
Garcia, 22, was not in the lineup for the Red Sox on Thursday, but he's likely to start in center field on Friday against the New York Yankees. He is batting .303 for Triple-A Worcester with 17 homers and 56 RBIs in 66 games.
