Reds' Hunter Greene likely to miss '27 after latest surgery

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Hunter Greene is likely to miss all of next season following his latest elbow operation.

The team confirmed Thursday that the former All-Star will be sidelined for 12-to-18 months following Wednesday's revision of his Tommy John surgery.

The Reds announced last Friday that Greene needed a season-ending operation but did not yet know the extent or type of procedure. He previously had Tommy John surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow in the minors in 2019. In March, he had an arthroscopic procedure to extract bone chips from the joint and did not make his season debut until July 4.

It is a crushing setback for Greene, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 draft who made his debut with Cincinnati in 2022. He is signed to a six-year, $53 million contract that runs through 2028 and the Reds hold a $21 million team option for 2029.

Greene, 27, finished 2-2 with a 6.83 ERA this season, striking out 33 and walking nine in 27 2/3 innings. An All-Star in 2024, Greene has a 27-31 record with a 3.82 ERA, 650 strikeouts and 188 walks in 523 1/3 innings.
