Reds RHP Hunter Greene (elbow) has 'slim chance' to return in '26

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Hunter Greene likely will miss the rest of his injury-plagued season with an elbow issue.

Manager Terry Francona confirmed Thursday -- Greene's 27th birthday -- that there's "probably a slim chance" he will return from the 15-day injured list, where he landed a day earlier with soreness in his right elbow.

Francona also told FOX19 of Cincinnati that the team will know more after Greene gets a second opinion.

Greene did not make his season debut until July 4 after being on the injured list since the end of March following surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow.

In his last outing on July 31, he allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts in six innings of an 8-7 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Greene is 2-2 with a 6.83 ERA, nine walks and 33 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings over five starts this season.

For his career, Greene is 27-31 with a 3.82 ERA and 650 strikeouts in 523 1/3 innings over 96 starts since 2022. He was an All-Star in 2024 and missed nearly three months in 2025 because of a strained right groin.

Cincinnati selected Greene second overall in the 2017 MLB Draft.
