ESPN reported Sunday night that the Browns have hired Dorsey, less than three months after the Bills fired him during the season. The Akron Beacon Journal confirmed the team's interest in Dorsey but said the hiring had not been made official.
The 42-year-old Dorsey spent two of his four seasons as an NFL quarterback with the Browns in 2006 and 2008.
Buffalo dismissed Dorsey as the team struggled to a 5-5 start to this season. The Bills were held to 25 points or fewer in six straight games prior to his departure.
Dorsey called plays for Buffalo's offense as coordinator, although his role with the Browns in that regard remains unclear. His predecessor in Cleveland, Alex Van Pelt, did not determine play-calling. Head coach Kevin Stefanski kept that role and has done so since he was hired in 2020.
Van Pelt was let go within days of the Browns getting routed 45-14 by the Houston Texans in the wild-card round of the playoffs on Jan. 13.
Dorsey was the quarterbacks coach for the Carolina Panthers from 2013-17. He took the same job with the Bills in 2019 and had the title of offensive pass game coordinator added in 2021. He became offensive coordinator in 2022.
