Report: Emails Indicate Ousted Penn State President Allegedly Said Not Reporting Jerry Sandusky To Cops Would Be "Humane"
So your bombshell revelation on the first day of the Jerry Sandusky trial has nothing to do with the case against Sandusky himself. NBC news reported this morning that Graham Spanier, the university president fired along with Joe Paterno in the days after the scandal broke last November, could face criminal charges for allegedly directing a cover-up as far back as 2001.
This is from the York (Pa.) Daily Record's account of the NBC report:
The NBC report said investigators have "major new evidence," including emails exchanged in 2001 between Spanier and university officials Gary Schultz and Tim Curley, both of who [sic] are already facing charges of perjury and failure to report suspected child abuse.
Investigators told NBC the emails show that Spanier and Schultz decided it would be "humane" to Sandusky to not involve legal authorities.
A Penn State spokesman confirmed to NBC that the school had turned over the emails as part of former FBI director Louis Freeh's ongoing independent investigation. And guess what? Lawyers for Curley and Schultz have already issued a statement throwing Spanier under the bus by saying the report confirms that the two administrators were basically following orders. Just try to remember this scandal has nothing to do with Penn State.
