Report: Yankees GM Brian Cashman expected back for 30th season

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is expected to return for his 30th season on the job in 2027.

That's according to the New York Post, which reported Friday that Cashman's contract is expiring and club owner Hal Steinbrenner has no reason not to offer him another.

Cashman, 59, was just 31 when the late George Steinbrenner, who was known for churning through managers and general managers, promoted him -- and kept him in the job. His first significant trade came Feb. 6, 1998, when he sent future All-Star shortstop Cristian Guzman and three prospects to the Minnesota Twins for infielder Chuck Knoblauch.

During Cashman's tenure, the Yankees have never had a losing season. They have won four World Series, seven American League pennants and 15 AL East titles. Nine of those came consecutively in Cashman's first nine seasons, with Joe Torre as the field manager.

In Cashman's 29 seasons, the Yankees have failed to qualify for the postseason just five times.

Cashman and Hal Steinbrenner will be forced to decide the future of manager Aaron Boone after the season. The Yankees are poised to make the playoffs for the eighth time in Boone's nine seasons, but he has been unable to deliver the first World Series title for the club since 2009.

Under Boone, the Yankees have lost once in the wild-card round, three times in the AL Division Series and twice in the AL Championship Series. The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated New York in five games in the 2024 World Series.
