Veteran guard CJ McCollum, who helped lead the Hawks to the playoffs after a January trade, will remain in Atlanta after agreeing to a one-year, $21 million contract extension, multiple outlets reported on Sunday.
Per McCollum's agent, Sam Goldfeder of Excel Sports Management, the deal includes a trade kicker. The 13-year veteran could have become a free agent as of June 30, the deadline for him to be eligible for an extension.
McCollum, 34, was acquired from the Wizards in the trade that sent four-time All-Star guard Trey Young to Washington, and played a key role in the Hawks taking a 2-1 lead in the first-round series against the eventual NBA champion New York Knicks.
McCollum scored 32 points in Game 3 in New York, sinking a 15-foot fadeaway jumper to give the Hawks the series lead.
In 41 games with the Hawks, McCollum averaged 18.7 points per game as Atlanta won 18 of 20 games during a late surge en route to the postseason.
A first-round pick (No. 10 overall) of the Portland Trail Blazers, McCollum made at least 150 3-pointers for the 11th straight season. He is the only NBA player to reach that mark every season since 2015-16.
McCollum is averaging 19.5 points, 3.8 assists and 3.6 rebounds over 863 games (750 starts) with the Trail Blazers, Hawks, Wizards and New Orleans Pelicans.
In college, McCollum became a March Madness hero by scoring 30 points to lead No. 15 seed Lehigh to a 75-70 upset of No. 2 Duke in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament.
