Reports: Reds' Eugenio Suarez, TJ Friedl unclaimed on outright waivers
Aug 22, 2026; Phoenix, Arizona, USA; Cincinnati Reds designated hitter Eugenio Suarez (28) prepares to bat with his PlayersO Weekend bat against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first inning at Chase Field. Mandatory Credit: Anna Carrington-Imagn Images Cincinnati Reds infielder Eugenio Suarez and outfielder TJ Friedl went through outright waivers unclaimed and will remain with the club, multiple outlets reported Thursday.
A claim on outright waivers would have transferred the entire remaining salary of either player to their new clubs.
According to The Athletic, Suarez and Friedl will be on the Reds' roster for the opener of a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs on Friday.
Suarez, 35, is playing on a one-year, $15 million contract he signed in February. He is batting .208 with 19 home runs and 59 RBIs through 103 games this season. His .705 OPS is well shy of the .824 mark last season, when he played for the Mariners after starting the season with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Suarez has a career OPS of .787.
Friedl, 31, is making $3.8 million in his first season of arbitration eligibility. He is batting .258 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in 76 games. His .476 OPS is well under his career mark of .724 over six seasons.
Friedl remains under club control for two more seasons.
