Reports: Yankees call up 1B prospect Ben Rice
Yankee’s prospect Ben Rice breaks for second against Rochester. The New York Yankees called up first baseman Ben Rice on Tuesday to replace the injured Anthony Rizzo, multiple outlets reported.
Ranked as the No. 12 prospect in the Yankees' system by MLB Pipeline, Rice was a 12th-round draft pick in 2021 and has yet to make his major league debut.
Rice, 25, is hitting .275 with 15 homers and 36 RBIs this season at two minor league levels. He is batting .333 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in 11 games since being promoted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Rizzo, 34, suffered a right arm fracture in a collision with Boston Red Sox pitcher Brennan Bernadino on Sunday and is expected to miss four to six weeks. He is hitting .223 with eight homers and 28 RBIs this season in 70 games.
In 14 seasons with the San Diego Padres (2011), Chicago Cubs (2012-21) and Yankees, Rizzo is a .262 hitter with 303 homers and 958 RBIs in 1,705 games.
