Reports: Yankees land Marcus Stroman for 2 years, $37M

The New York Yankees beefed up their rotation on Thursday, agreeing to a two-year, $37 million deal with free agent right-hander Marcus Stroman, according to multiple media reports.

The contract includes a vesting option for a third year. Per reports, Stroman could choose to receive $18 million for the 2026 season if he pitches at least 140 innings in 2025.

Stroman joins a rotation that will include Gerrit Cole, who recently won the American League Cy Young Award, as well as Carlos Rodon, Nestor Cortes and Clarke Schmidt.

Stroman, 32, was an All-Star last year for the Chicago Cubs, when he finished 10-9 with a 3.95 ERA in 27 games (25 starts). The highlight of his season was a one-hit shutout against Tampa Bay on May 29, when Wander Franco got the Rays' lone hit, a single, leading off the seventh inning.

A first-round pick of the Blue Jays in 2012, Stroman pitched in Toronto from 2014-19. Shortly after making his first All-Star team in July 2019, he was traded to the New York Mets for left-hander Anthony Kay and right-hander Simeon Woods Richardson.

Stroman pitched two seasons for the Mets, sitting out the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign. He signed a three-year, $71 million deal with the Cubs in December 2021, then exercised his right to opt out of that contract after two seasons.
