In a corresponding move to create room on the 40-man roster, the Phillies designated right-hander McKinley Moore for assignment.
Turnbull, 31, became a free agent after pitching parts of five seasons for the Detroit Tigers. Last season, he was limited to seven starts and went 1-4 with a 7.26 ERA, 24 strikeouts and 15 walks in 31 innings while missing time with neck and toe injuries. He became a free agent after the season.
He missed the entire 2022 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. For his career in Detroit from 2018-23, Turnbull was 12-29 with a 4.55 ERA, 280 strikeouts and 119 walks in 302 1/3 innings over 61 games (60 starts).
Detroit selected him in the second round of the 2014 MLB Draft out of Alabama. Turnbull threw a no-hitter against the Seattle Mariners in 2021, marking the first (and only) time he pitched more than seven innings in a major league game.
Moore, 25, appeared in three games in relief as a rookie in 2023 and had a 18.90 ERA in 3 1/3 innings.
