AJ Dybantsa also had 21 in the game and Kennard Davis Jr. added 16 for the Cougars (21-10, 9-9 Big 12), who overcame a 13-point deficit for the win.
Texas Tech (22-9, 12-6) falls to a No. 4 seed in next week's Big 12 tournament with the loss.
Christian Anderson led the Red Raiders with 23 points and nine assists. He finished the regular season with a school-record 233 assists for the season.
Donovan Atwell also had 23 points and Jaylen Petty had 14 for Texas Tech.
Anderson buried a 3-pointer with 1:46 to go to tie the game at 75.
Davis answered with a 3-pointer to give the Cougars a 78-75 lead.
Atwell made one of two free throws with 24 seconds left, but Wright sealed the win with two free throws with 19 seconds remaining for an 80-76 BYU lead. He added two more with 8 seconds on the clock for the final score.
BYU finished 31 of 70 from the floor (44.3%), including 6 of 26 from beyond the arc (23.1%). Texas Tech was 46.6% on field-goal attempts (27 of 58), 16 of 35 from long range (45.7%).
The Red Raiders led 46-38 at halftime behind 15 from Anderson and 14 from Atwell.
Texas Tech shot 55.2% from the field and made 12 of 19 3-pointers in the first half.
The teams finished the half with a 3-point frenzy as nine of the last 11 field goals made by the two teams in the final 5:12 were 3-pointers.
That includes the teams trading 3-pointers on the last six shots over the final 1:52 of the half.
The Red Raiders led by 13 at the 7:40 mark of the first half when Josiah Moseley nailed a 3-pointer and Petty scored on a layup.
Texas Tech had scored eight points in the paint, had three second-chance points and had hit 55% of their shots, including 7-of-11 3-pointers.
Anderson already had 12 by the time Texas Tech led 31-18.
The Cougars, meanwhile, had made just 29% of their shots.
BYU got back to single digits, however, as Davis scored five of his 13 first-half points with a layup and a 3-pointer sandwiched around a tip-in by Khadim Mboup to make it 31-25 with 3:45 left.
