Ryan O’Hearn-led Orioles hand Diamondbacks third straight setback
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (14) tags out Baltimore Orioles Adley Rutschman (35) at home plate during their game at Chase Field on April 7, 2025. Ryan O'Hearn had two hits, including a homer, and Gunnar Henderson had two hits, two runs and two stolen bases when the Baltimore Orioles beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-1 in Phoenix on Monday.
Ryan Mountcastle had a two-run single and Zac Eflin (2-1) gave up one run in six innings in his third quality start of the season for the Orioles, who had lost four of five.
Josh Naylor had two hits and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. drove in a run with a sacrifice fly for the Diamondbacks, who have lost three in a row and four of five.
Eflin gave up four hits, struck out one and did not walk a batter. He retired the final eight he faced and left after an efficient 73 pitches.
Arizona starter Zac Gallen (1-2) gave up five runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings, with four walks and two strikeouts. He has walked four in both of his home starts this season.
The Orioles started early. O'Hearn homered for a 1-0 lead in the first inning, and they added another run in the third when Henderson doubled with one out and scored on Adley Rutschman's single.
O'Hearn doubled to put runners on second and third with one out before Gallen got out of trouble. Rutschman was thrown out at home on Jordan Westburg's grounder to third baseman Eugenio Suarez and Mountcastle popped out.
Pavin Smith and Naylor singled to open the Arizona fourth, and Gurriel drove in Smith for the Diamondbacks' only run.
The Orioles broke it open in the fifth, after Henderson singled and stole second and Rutschman walked to open the inning. O'Hearn's groundout to first moved the runners up. Westburg then walked.
Arizona second baseman Tim Tawa bobbled Cedric Mullins' potential double-play grounder and the Diamondbacks had to settle for the out at first but Henderson scored. The Orioles took advantage when Mountcastle singled in the final two runs of the inning.
