Samuel Basallo, Orioles reach 8-year extension

Top prospect Samuel Basallo agreed to an eight-year contract extension with the Baltimore Orioles, the team announced on Friday.
The deal is worth a reported $67 million covering the 2026-33 seasons with a club option for 2034.
"We are thrilled to agree with Samuel long-term and are delighted about what this means for him and his family," said Orioles General Manager Mike Elias. "His debut and this extension are big achievements for our organization, beginning with the work of our international scouting staff and carried forward successfully by our entire player development operation."
"The agreement with Samuel is just a catalyst for the next exciting period of Orioles baseball," added Orioles owner David Rubenstein.
Basallo, who turned 21 on Aug. 13, made his major league debut four days later. MLB Pipeline ranked the catcher/first baseman as the No. 8 overall prospect in baseball at the time.
Since making his debut last Sunday, he is batting .286 (4-for-14) with one double, five RBIs and one run in four games.
The Orioles signed the Dominican Republic native in January 2021 to a then-franchise record international signing bonus of $1.3 million.
Basallo appeared in 401 minor league games over five seasons with a slash line of .283/.366/.498/.864 with 73 home runs and 269 runs driven in.
In 76 games this season at Triple-A Norfolk, he hit 23 home runs to go with 67 RBIs and a .270 average.
