Simeon Woods Richardson gets first MLB win, Twins sweep Tigers
Simeon Woods Richardson pitched six strong innings after being called up from the minors, earning his first major league win as the visiting Minnesota Twins completed a doubleheader sweep with a 4-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday.
Woods Richardson (1-0), who was elevated from Triple-A St. Paul, gave up one run and two hits while recording five strikeouts. He was making his third major league appearance.
Cole Sands recorded his first save by tossing the last 2 1/3 innings. He didn't allow a baserunner while notching three strikeouts.
Willi Castro blasted a two-run homer and Edouard Julien supplied a solo shot to lead the Twins' attack.
The Twins won the opener, 11-5, while scoring seven runs in the top of the 12th.
Tigers starter Matt Manning (0-1), recalled from Triple-A Toledo, gave up four runs and five hits in 6 2/3 innings. He also notched seven strikeouts. Wenceel Perez had the first two hits of his major league career.
Manning walked the first two batters he faced. After a fielder's choice, Byron Buxton hit a sacrifice fly to plate Julien.
Detroit tied it in the bottom of the second. Kerry Carpenter singled and Colt Keith walked. Perez reached on an infield hit to load the bases and Javier Baez scored Carpenter with a sacrifice fly.
Perez stole second to put runners in scoring position, but Jake Rogers flied out.
Julien smacked his fourth homer in the third to give the Twins a 2-1 lead.
The Twins extended the advantage after the first two batters struck out in the sixth. Austin Martin reached on a bloop single before Castro blasted the first pitch, a sweeping breaking ball, over the right-center field wall. It was his first long ball of the season.
The Tigers had a threat going in the seventh when Matt Vierling singled and Perez doubled to put runners in scoring position. Baez then grounded out against Sands, ending the inning.
