Smoltz Vs. Maddux: More Fun Than A Barrel of Cy Youngs

Notes on a day in baseball:

• The Matchup You Never Thought You'd See. If you were at the game in Atlanta yesterday you watched 533 wins and five Cy Young awards, which is always impressive. It was John Smoltz and Greg Maddux, meeting head-to-head for the first time since 1992. Smoltz prevailed, with the Braves beating the Padres 3-2. Smoltz is 5-1 by the way, impressive in itself. He pitched into the seventh, while Maddux — who was Smoltz' teammate for 11 years with the Braves — gave up four hits and one run over 5 1/3. Andruw Jones singled in the winning run in the seventh.

• No Skydome? Who Is This 'Rogers?' Daisuke Matsuzaka looked dominating, as we always said he would* once he got a few starts under his belt. The Red Sox beat the Blue Jays 9-3, as Dice wowed the Rogers Centre with eight strikeouts, after having allowed 17 runs in 16 innings prior to Wednesday.

• Keep Your Little Mitts Off Of Rickey's Ball. Sure, the Mets beat the Giants 5-3, as Carlos Delgado tied it in the eighth and David Wright won it with a two-run double in the ninth. Delgado also homered into McCovey Cove for the third time in his career. No Bonds homer. Our favorite news from the Mets, however, is this. Rickey's collection is now complete.

• Mike Mussina Would Like To Have This Next Dance, Please. Mike Mussina is back, baby. Perhaps not moving as smoothly as teammate Chien-Ming Wang, but good enough to get the Yankees back to .500 after a 6-2 win over the Rangers. Mussina gave up three hits over six innings and Derek Jeter had three RBI.

• And If That's Not Soon Enough, You Can Make It A Minute-And-A-Huff. Meanwhile, Erik Bedard had seven scoreless innings against the Devil Rays in Baltimore's 1-0 win. Aubrey Huff's homer in the 10th won it.
