Soccer In Argentina Suspended Again After Another Player Dies
Just weeks after the passing of Emanuel Ortega from an injury suffered on the field of play, Argentina is again mourning the loss of a player. Cristián Gómez, of Atlético Paraná, died this weekend of cardiac arrest after collapsing in the middle of a game.
In the video above, you can see the Boca Unidos-Atlético match as it is halted after Gómez fell to the grass and became unresponsive. Players tried fanning him, probably suspecting the fall had something to do with the heat, but eventually the ambulance came to take him away. He reportedly died on the way to the hospital.
The rest of the match was suspended at halftime, and every other match in Argentina’s pro leagues that had yet to be played were postponed as well. It’s unclear for how long play will be suspended.
