Mandatory Credit: Brad Penner-Imagn Images St. Louis City SC signed former Columbus Crew midfielder Alexandru Matan through 2028-29 on Tuesday.
The deal with the 26-year-old Romanian free agent includes an option for 2029-30.
St. Louis sent $100,000 in 2026 general allocation money to Columbus for Matan's right of first refusal.
Matan played for the Crew from 2021-24, winning the MLS Cup in 2023 and Leagues Cup in 2024 while posting seven goals and 18 assists in 117 matches across all competitions.
"He brings something different to the squad with his creativity, his ability to progress the ball and his bravery in one-on-one situations," St. Louis sporting director Corey Wray said. "He has a clear understanding of how we want to play and his familiarity with the system, combined with his experience in the league, should help him settle in quickly."
Matan most recently played for Greek top-flight side Panetolikos FC from 2025-26.
