Surging Cubs score runs in late innings, deal loss to Yankees

Nico Hoerner hit the tying homer and Pete Crow-Armstrong hit a go-ahead triple to help the host Chicago Cubs post a 5-2 victory over the New York Yankees on Saturday night.

Seiya Suzuki and Michael Busch added RBI singles as the Cubs won for the sixth time in their past nine games.

Spencer Jones homered and Jose Caballero had an RBI single for the Yankees, who lost for the third time in the past four games. Ali Sanchez had three hits and Jones had two and scored both New York runs.

Cubs left-hander Caleb Thielbar gave up a leadoff single in the ninth before getting Sanchez to hit into a double play and Caballero to bounce out. It was his third save of the season.

New York starter Max Fried gave up one run and two hits over 5 1/3 innings. The left-hander struck out seven and walked one.

David Peterson struck out eight over 6 1/3 innings for the Cubs. The left-hander allowed two runs (one earned) and five hits and walked none.

Trent Thornton (4-4) picked up the win in relief despite allowing a single and two walks in the seventh. The right-hander recorded two outs, one when Sanchez was thrown out stealing.

Jones came up with one out in that inning and hit a first-pitch fastball from Peterson over the wall in left-center to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead.

Hoerner led off the bottom of the inning by hitting a 2-2 splitter from Fernando Cruz (4-6) down the left field line. The ball barely cleared the ivy and it was just fair to knot the score.

Cruz retired the next two batters before walking pinch hitter Pedro Ramirez. Reliever Brent Headrick entered and Crow-Armstrong greeted him with a shot into the right field corner. The ball hit the side wall and shot past Jasson Dominguez as Armstrong ended up with a triple that scored Ramirez.

Suzuki followed with an RBI single to give Chicago a 4-2 lead.

The Cubs tacked on a run in the eighth when Alex Bregman walked against Yovanny Cruz, moved to third on Carson Kelly's single to left and scored on Busch's single to left.

The Cubs scored in the bottom of the first as Crow-Armstrong walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and third on a grounder by Suzuki before scoring on another wild pitch by Fried.

New York knotted the score in the fifth after Jones reached on a two-out error by first baseman Busch. Sanchez followed with a single to put runners on first and second before Caballero delivered a tying single.
