Chicago Blackhawks Kick Their Season Off With Boneheaded Own Goal
The Blackhawks were always going to lose here. Down two goals with fewer than 30 seconds left in the game usually means certain death. You don’t have to make it any worse by casually scooting the puck into your own net, my dudes....
Man Who Discovered Hockey No-Shows NHL Awards
Anthony Holmes, the man who discovered that playoff hockey is fun, and then a month later discovered that the Blues will never win anything, was supposed to appear at Wednesday’s NHL Awards in Las Vegas. He never showed up. ...
David Backes Chokes Up Talking About The Blues' Run
It was a very good season for a very good Blues team, a balanced roster that did everything well enough to get past two of the conference’s favorites and to make the NHL’s final four, but didn’t do anything quite well enough to make it further....
How Joe Pavelski Became A Tip Machine
It was, is, and will be for at least the next 36 hours the most important goal in Sharks history. Joe Pavelski’s redirection of a Brent Burns shot broke a third-period tie and stood up the rest of the way, the winner in a 6-3 victory that brings San Jose to within one game of the Stanley Cup Finals,...
Don't Leave Brent Burns Open
Back east we’ve got two fast, hard-hitting, well-rounded teams, that frankly play fairly similar games. Out west is a more intriguing clash of styles: The Blues are more defensive minded, more deliberate, more physical, while the Sharks thrive on offense, speed, puck movement, and the most exciting ...
Game 1 Belonged To Brian Elliott
In the 2016 Western Conference Finals: The Great Unchokening, I (and Vegas) give the slight nod to the Blues. They’ve beaten better teams to get here, and they’re constructed more defensively-minded, the sort of team that succeeds in tight playoff games. That’s the blueliners, for sure, but more tha...
The Blues Wouldn't Really Bench Brian Elliott For Game 7. Right?
It was a bad night for Blues goalie Brian Elliott, yanked after allowing three goals—against just four saves—in the first period of Dallas’s 3-2 win. Bad nights happen. But is there really a chance that Elliott was so out of sorts that Jake Allen will get the nod in Wednesday’s Game 7? Ken Hitchcock...

The Story Behind Hockey's Most Famous Photo
The number of truly iconic hockey pictures is surprisingly small. The sport is notoriously difficult to photograph, thanks to the fast-paced action, the elusive puck, and some unique space, proximity, and lighting restrictions. There’s Denis Brodeur (yes, Martin’s father) and his shot of Paul Hender...
Man Who Discovered Hockey Attends Hockey Game, Loves It
Nascent Blues fan Anthony Holmes, who learned about hockey when he watched Game 7 of Blackhawks-Blues last week, was St. Louis’s guest for Tuesday’s Game 3 against the Dallas Stars. He had better seats than you’ll ever have....
Ryan Reaves Blows The Stars A Kiss After Beatdown
The Stars scored first, then the Blues reeled off six unanswered goals, with 12 different players recording points. It was a laugher by the time Stephen Johns boarded Alex Pietrangelo, which somehow ended up with Ryan Reaves and Curtis McKenzie (briefly) trading blows....
Man Discovers Hockey, Loves It
The NHL convinced one more person to please like its sport last night. A man on Twitter tuned into Game 7 of Blackhawks-Blues, the first hockey game he had ever seen. He tweeted as he watched, and his enthusiasm was delightful....
St. Louis Blues Eliminate Blackhawks From Stanley Cup 'Yoffs
That gif above you is a neat encapsulation of the sort of night the Blackhawks had tonight. The St. Louis Blues took Game 7 at home 3-2 and broke Chicago’s 18-game streak of winning in the playoffs when Marian Hossa scores. Chicago outshot their southern neighbors 33-26, but they gave up two goals i...
Finally, Patrick Kane
Pushed to the edge of elimination, the Blackhawks haven’t gotten much from their best goalscorers—and the Blues have. Patrick Kane, the NHL’s regular-season points leader, hadn’t found the back of the net through the first four games. Or through three periods of last night’s game. Or in the first ov...
Corey Crawford Lost His Mind For A Second There
I think staged fighting is hockey’s biggest joke and I’m glad it’s on its way out. But give me a goalie hulking out, in full pads, and I lose my mind like a kid who just found out it’s a snow day, or the people from this perfect tweet. So my personal highlight of last night’s very busy 4-3 Blues win...
Blues Take Series Lead Over Blackhawks On Fluke Overtime Goal
You take it. It doesn’t matter how lucky or unpretty a goal is, or how little it has to do with the person credited with it, you take the score. Especially in the playoffs, especially in overtime, especially against a Blackhawks team that’s about to get Duncan Keith back. You take the 1-0 series lea...
Fans Chant "Kroenke Sucks" As Blues And Cardinals Send A Message From St. Louis
As of this week, St. Louis is a two-sport town. Both of those franchises were represented at the puck drop for last night’s Blues-Hurricanes game, offering a show of solidarity, but the fans added a little extra message of their own for the owner of their former football team....
The Blues And Blackhawks Scored 10 Damn Goals In Two Periods
We get emails. Today’s email, from Mikhail, is a perfectly acceptable one:...
