The Pirates Might Just Sweep A Five-Game Series From The Cardinals
Four games into a five-game series with the Cardinals, the consensus best team in baseball entering last weekend, the Pirates have taken all four games, and breezed by St. Louis for the NL Central lead. And now they have a chance to sweep a five-game series....
Desperate Cubs Fan Resorts To In-Game Cannibalism

What Are These Symbols On The Mound At Busch Stadium?
The (St. Louis) Riverfront Times writes today about a pair of symbols scrawled into the mound at Busch Stadium, with a handful of pictures taken of a TV serving as evidence. We investigated, and, sure enough, they have definitely been there for at least a month. But what are they? (Hint: It's obviou...
Suitors of Spring
Nice piece by Jane Gross—who we've heard from round these parts before—in the Times:...
Matt Holliday Homered With His Fly Wide Open
Check the Cardinals' reactions when Holliday gets back to the dugout. Lot of downward glances, sly smiles. They know. And not one took the opportunity to mutter "XYZ." Some teammates....
A New MLB Rule Forced Royals-Cardinals To Go 8 Soggy Hours
The listed time of game for the desperate Royals' 4-2 win over the Cardinals was a crisp 2:27. This is how box scores lie to you. The last out was recorded at 3:14 a.m. CDT, with maybe 100 fans left in the stadium. In baseball limbo, Mitchell Boggs is forever coming on to protect a lead....
Shane Robinson Had To Wipe His Hand, So He Used Pete Kozma's Jersey
The Cardinals' dugout had just greeted Matt Carpenter after he scored on Matt Holliday's double in the bottom of the first. Yeah. We know as much about this as Pete Kozma does....
Pirates Starting Pitcher Has Spectacularly Short Outing
Pittsburgh lefty Jonathan Sanchez started last night's game in St. Louis. His stat line reads as follows: 0.0 IP, 3 H, 2R, 2ER, 2 HR, 1 HBP. He faced four batters and threw all of 17 pitches, and then he was gone. He did not get hurt....
Bob Costas's Eulogy For Stan Musial Was Midwestern Sports Reverence At Its Finest
The gee whiz school of sports coverage has lost ground for years to the aw nuts crowd, largely because fans and media alike don't like playing the patsy to athletes' bogus lore. Lance was doping. Bobby Thomson stole signs. Manti was mourning a photograph with a nice voice. What's the world coming to...
Cardinals Great Stan Musial Dead At 92
Baseball Hall of Famer and unquestionable great Stan "The Man" Musial passed away tonight at 92. Musial started his major league career in 1941 and would play his last game in September of 1963; in the intervening seasons he made 24 All-Star teams, missing out only once, when he was serving in the U...
The St. Louis Cardinals Just Traded For Subject 7 From The Duke Fuck List
On Tuesday, the St. Louis Cardinals traded infielder Skip Schumaker to the Los Angeles Dodgers for some guy named Jake Lemmerman. Who is Jake Lemmerman? The baseball record says he's nobody special, a 24-year-old utility infielder who's put up decent numbers in the minors and profiles as a solid ba...
St. Louis Columnist Determined To Uncover The Truth About David Freese's Car Crash
World Series hero David Freese had a car accident on Thanksgiving. He was driving his Range Rover in Wildwood, outside St. Louis, when a deer appeared ahead of him. Freese swerved to avoid it, lost control, and drove off the road an into a tree. At least, that's what they WANT you to think....
A Fully Redeemed Mark McGwire Will Be The Dodgers' Hitting Coach
It's kind of weird to picture, this report from the Post-Dispatch's Joe Strauss. Mark McGwire leaving St. Louis to become the Dodgers' new hitting coach, even turning down the Cardinals' offer of a contract extension? It's not just that McGwire has been wearing red for 15 years-sometimes we prefer t...
The Giants' Pennant Run Ended Right As Rain
How many LCS clinchers, not involving your team, do you actually remember? Carlos Beltran standing stock-still, Aaron Boone going deep, Sid Bream's slide, Chris Chambliss's homer...and that's probably about it. It's probably fair to add last night's Giants win, a 9-0 drubbing that was decided by th...
"3 words... FIRE MIKE MATHENY": The Best Fans In Baseball Are Having A Major Meltdown
Cardinals fans are known the world over as the best fans in baseball. This is, of course, indisputable but it makes what has to be a fandom-wide psychotic break after watching their beloved Cardinals get shellacked by the Giants in Game 7 of the NLCS troubling indeed....
The San Francisco Giants Are Going To The World Series
The Giants trounced the Cardinals by a score of 9-0, completing an impressive comeback from a 3-1 series deficit and managing to kill the previously immortal St. Louis Cardinals. Even a team as resilient as this Cardinals team can only be carried so far by the likes of Daniel Descalso, Pete Kozma, ...
Your NLCS Game 7 Open Thread
There are not many words to describe a Game 7. "Awesome" would be a good place to start and finish. The Cardinals jumped out to a 3-1 series lead, riding whatever Tony LaRussa magic potion/moonshine he left in the office but the Giants have battled back to force this decisive game. Joe Buck and Tim...
Lil Wayne Sang "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" At Last Night's Cardinals-Giants Game
A lady in a ridiculous hat singing "God Bless America" wasn't the only crazy thing to happen during the seventh inning stretch last night. The San Francisco Giants also welcomed Lil Wayne onto the field, where he led the crowd in a less than rousing rendition of "Take Me Out To The Ballgame."...
Missouri Man Holds Up Bank, Yells "Go Cards" As He Makes His Getaway
Fans of the St. Louis Cardinals are just the best in baseball, aren't they? While everyone else robs banks in the greater St. Louis area in such a negative, surly way, Cardinals fans do it with gusto and spirit and enthusiasm....
Here's How A Year-Old Aerial Shot Of St. Louis Ended Up On Last Night's Fox Broadcast
When we noted earlier today Fox's apparent use of old video during last night's NLCS broadcast from St. Louis, we asked how such a thing might happen—and if it was simply a mistake or a revelation that much of what we assume is a live broadcast is, indeed, not live at all....
