The Cavaliers Have a Chance to Make a Statement Against LeBron James
The Philadelphia 76ers opened their season on the road by spoiling banner night for the New York Knicks. LeBron James made it clear he wanted to play at Madison Square Garden, but after the Knicks won the title, he shifted his plans to Philly. That shift left one other fan base feeling slighted by his decision, a certain fan base that has been slighted by LeBron’s decisions countless times.
On the other end of the hardwood is the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs fizzled out in the Eastern Conference Finals last season and hoped to sign LeBron to get them over the hump, but they weren’t even a finalist for James. Fortunately for them, they get the chance to spoil LeBron’s first showing for the Sixers.
The NBA is obviously no sprint, but Cleveland needs to come out of the gate faster than most teams in the East. Beyond an embarrassing ECF showing, Cleveland has earned a bad reputation in the East. Donovan Mitchell and James Harden will always be a tricky perimeter pairing, and the double-big lineup of Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen is also a tough fit in the playoffs.
While that core stayed intact this offseason, Cleveland made one of the league's more underrated moves by trading for Peyton Watson. The 24-year-old wing is a step down defensively from the now-76er Dean Wade, but he won’t be an offensive liability for the Cavs.
Since the Cavs acquired Mitchell in 2022, Cleveland has had a massive black hole at small forward, and Watson could fix that. But beyond the Cavs starting hot and beating the guy who backstabbed them for the millionth time, the East is loaded, and the Cavs need to prove they’re contenders again.
That said, is there a team more underrated than the Cavs? I know they’ve had their fair share of playoff struggles, but things feel different in 2026. In 2024, the Cavs won 64 games but struggled with a ton of injuries in the playoffs before losing to a Pacers team that almost went on to win the Finals.
Then last season, Cleveland had two fourth-quarter leads against the Knicks on the road, but horrific defensive chokes blew the series before it even headed back to Cleveland. If Kenny Atkinson made a single defensive adjustment and didn’t let Jalen Brunson hunt James Harden for an entire quarter, we might be looking at the Cavs much differently.
The Cavs also made some quiet improvements with the aforementioned Watson trade, signing Mario Hezonja and drafting Maleek Thomas. Most importantly, the Cavs are heading into this season healthy for a change. Cleveland was riddled with injuries last season, and things look a lot better, at least for now.
The Sixers head into their home opener as -3.5 point favorites, but I’m going with the Cavs to make a statement on their opening night.
