The Red Sox's Sellout Streak Is In Danger, So They're Lowering Beer Prices
For the first time in a few years, reason to cheer in Boston. Five-dollar beers!
The Fenway attendance bubble is on the verge of popping. (Actually, it popped. The Red Sox have been keeping their 10-year sellout streak alive on technicalities, resorting to giving away tickets and fudging the standing room numbers, among other tricks.) April is set up as a perfect storm for low turnout—cold weather, 17 home games, unsexy opponents, and of course a Red Sox team that should be near the cellar of the AL East.
“We recognize that the sellout streak is likely going to be coming to an end in early April, and we’re looking for ways to thank our fans for their incredible support and commitment,” Red Sox chief operating officer Sam Kennedy said.
You say giving back to the fans, I say bribing them with cheap intoxication. Chowder, chowdah. Whatever the reason, the Red Sox will be dropping the prices of concessions throughout April: two-for-one hot dogs, free kids' meals, and most incredibly, the price of a 12-oz. beer will fall to $5, down from $7.50-8.50. If the measures are any indication, these are desperate times.
Sure enough, the Globe reports that season-ticket renewals are down 10 percent from this time last year, and seats still remain available for the home opener against Baltimore on April 8.
