Tigers 2B Gleyber Torres to have sports hernia surgery
Oct 8, 2025; Detroit, Michigan, USA; Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres (25) prepares to turn a double play against the Seattle Mariners in the eighth inning during game four of the ALDS round for the 2025 MLB playoffs at Comerica Park. Mandatory Credit: Lon Horwedel-Imagn Images Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres will undergo sports hernia surgery after playing through "a lot of pain."
He told reporters of his plans following Friday's season-ending loss to the Seattle Mariners in Game 5 of the American League Division Series.
"It was not good from the (start of the) second half," Torres said, per the Detroit News. "It was a lot of pain. But we (the medical and training staff) do a really good job keeping me playing. ... It's not about the numbers; it's just about playing every day."
Torres, 28, made the All-Star team in his first season with the Tigers and finished with a .256 average, 16 homers and 74 RBIs in 145 games.
His season splits reveal that the injury hampered his play following the All-Star break, however. He hit .281 with an .812 OPS, nine homers and 45 RBIs in the first half and .223 with a .659 OPS, seven home runs and 29 RBIs during the second half.
Torres went 0-for-6 in Friday's 3-2 loss in 15 innings in Seattle to finish the postseason with a .235 average, one home run and one RBI in eight games.
After playing his first seven seasons (2018-24) with the New York Yankees, Torres signed a one-year, $15 million deal with Detroit in December. He will be a free agent again after the World Series.
