Rebilas-Imagn Images Minnesota Twins left-handed reliever Anthony Banda is out for the season after undergoing lat surgery on Thursday, according to The Athletic.
Banda, 32, who has been on the 15-day injured list with a left lat strain since June 29, said he expects to be ready for next year's spring training. He will be transferred to the 60-day IL when the Twins need an open roster spot.
Banda was 2-0 with a 4.46 ERA in 34 1/3 innings across 39 appearances this season. He had been on the upswing in the month leading up to his injury, posting a 1.93 ERA in 9 1/3 innings across 11 outings in June.
He is 17-9 with a 4.44 ERA over 248 appearances (nine starts) for nine teams.
This news is a blow to Minnesota's bullpen, which had a 5.24 ERA entering Thursday's action, tied with the Kansas City Royals for worst in the majors.
The Twins acquired Banda in February after the Los Angeles Dodgers designated him for assignment. Minnesota can re-sign him via arbitration for 2027.
