Mandatory Credit: Brad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy underwent a full meniscus repair on Wednesday, knocking the rookie out for the entire 2024 NFL season, head coach Kevin O'Connell said.
Tests revealed the meniscus injury, but the severity -- and the recovery timetable -- wasn't known until Dr. Chris Larson of Twin Cities Orthopedics performed the surgery.
"It was a successful procedure. But it did reveal a repair was necessary which will end J.J.'s 2024 season," O'Connell said.
Sam Darnold will be the Vikings' starting QB when Minnesota opens the regular season on Sept. 8 against the host New York Giants.
McCarthy completed 11 of 17 passes for 188 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in Saturday's 24-23 win against the Las Vegas Raiders in the Vikings' preseason opener.
The first-round draft pick (10th overall) led Michigan to an undefeated national championship last season, completing 72.3 percent of his passes for 2,991 yards with 22 touchdowns and four interceptions.
