Walbert Urena shines as Angels down Yankees, end 7-game skid

Rookie Walbert Urena allowed one run over seven innings and Vaughn Grissom went 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs as the Los Angeles Angels snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 10-1 victory over the New York Yankees on Monday in Anaheim, Calif.

Urena (9-9) gave up five hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out eight, matching his career high. He threw 95 pitches, 68 for strikes, and also matched the longest outing of his career.

Mike Trout collected two hits and two RBIs, Wade Meckler had two hits and two walks, Christian Moore doubled, singled and drove in two runs, and Tyler Heineman, Zach Neto and Grissom each scored twice for Los Angeles.

Spencer Jones hit a home run and Amed Rosario and Cody Bellinger each had two hits for New York, which had won three of its previous four games. The Yankees had a five-game winning streak at Angel Stadium snapped.

Rookie Elmer Rodriguez (0-3) remained winless in six career starts, allowing four runs on four hits in 3 2/3 innings. He walked three, hit two batters and struck out five.

Los Angeles took a 1-0 lead in the third when Heineman led off with a double down the left field line and scored on a two-out single by Grissom.

The Angels took advantage of Rodriguez's wildness to extend the lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning. Oswald Peraza and Heineman both were hit by pitches with two outs. Neto then drove in Peraza with a single, and Trout followed with a two-run single to left.

Jones cut the Yankees' deficit to 4-1 in the fifth with his eighth home run, a 398-foot drive to center.

Los Angeles made it 6-1 in the bottom of the fifth. Grissom led off with a double and scored one out later on Moore's bloop double to right. Moore later scored on an errant pickoff throw by reliever Michael Fulmer that went into center field.

The Angels extended the lead to 7-1 in the sixth when Neto led off with a walk, advanced to third on a single by Meckler and scored on a pair of errors by shortstop Jose Caballero, who first mishandled a potential double-play grounder and then threw wildly to first.

Los Angeles blew the game open with three more runs off Yankees closer David Bednar in the eighth inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Grissom and an RBI single by Moore.

The contest was the opener of a three-game series.
