Watch James Dolan Being Incredibly Open About Fucking Up The Knicks
"I am by no means an expert in basketball," said Knicks owner James Dolan.
The clip above came out of today's presser introducing Phil Jackson as Knicks team President and basketball messiah. The whole thing was as boring as these usually are, with Phil going on his weird old man walkabouts about Red Holzman and offensive rebounding. But there was a moment near the end that didn't have much to do with Jackson that sold the magic beans.
Dolan, in front of a room full of press, who he knows think he is a moron, just came out and said that he really shouldn't be involved with basketball stuff. And he says, honestly or otherwise, that he really didn't want to be involved with the decisions to begin with. Leave it to the beat writers to sort out how much that washes with the history of MSG palace intrigue, but it at least seems like a sign he'll get out of Phil's way, like he got out of Isiah's.
Maybe Dolan builds a lot of off-ramps for himself into the riff, and he's maybe a little generous with the self-praise about his business "expertise," but come on—this is more self-awareness than you ever thought you'd squeeze out of the little hedgehog. So that's one thing down. Now maybe just worry about Phil's feelings about those offensive rebounds.
