We Are All Dave McKenna XXXII
Here's your daily link to Dave McKenna's brilliant "Cranky Redskins Fan's Guide to Dan Snyder," which we'll be posting until Snyder's dumbass libel suit gets curb-stomped by a judge. For your consumption today we have a debate between two gentlemen at CSNwashington.com regarding the legacy of Clinton Portis, the primary running back for the Redskins during Snyder's tenure. The conclusion? Portis, whom the team released last week, was a solid back (second on the team's all-time rushing list) who falls short of greatness.
Rich Tandler: Portis was everything that was right and everything that was wrong about the Redskins since 2004. In many ways, he was the poster child for the overpaid and under-motivated players of the Dan Snyder Era. The Redskins paid Portis a lot of money, more than any other team would have paid him.
Indeed, the Redskins under Snyder have done nothing but spend unwisely. Reader Bill Fink directs us to a passage from a recent book by Tobias J. Moskowitz and L. Jon Wertheim:
In the book Scorecasting (which I bought per a Deadspin recommendation) in the chapter on statistical analysis of draft picks, on p.191 it says:
"Which teams are on the other end of the spectrum, routinely trading up in the draft to get higher picks and overpaying for them? The answer is unlikely to surprise you: the Oakland Raiders and the Washington Redskins, who collectively have the fewest number of wins per dollar spent.
"Ironically, the Redskins had extensive discussions w/Massey and Taylor early on in their research (about draft strategy), and the two professors met with team owner Dan Snyder and his football staff. After receiving the advice to go off the chart and trade down in the draft and give up current picks for future ones, the Redskins did the exact opposite"
Dan Snyder: the exact opposite of sound business. Help fight evil with a donation to the weekly's legal defense fund.
