White Sox hold on for tight win over Tigers

Andrew Benintendi drove in the go-ahead run and the visiting Chicago White Sox held on for a 4-3 win over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday afternoon.

Benintendi had two hits and also scored a run. Colson Montgomery drove in two runs and Braden Montgomery knocked in the other for the White Sox, who extended their lead over the Tigers to 4 1/2 games in the American League Central Division.

Jordan Hicks (2-1) tossed 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win. Bryan Hudson got the last three outs for his fifth save.

Eduardo Valencia homered and drove in two runs for Detroit. Gleyber Torres supplied three hits and drove in the Tigers' third run.

Sam Antonacci led off the game with a double. Detroit starter Troy Melton walked the next batter, then recorded two outs. Braden Montgomery knocked in Antonacci with a single to right.

Detroit tied it in the bottom of the inning against Anthony Kay. Hao-Yu Lee reached on an infield single, and Kevin McGonigle walked with two out. Valencia laced a single to center to drive home Lee.

Munetaka Murakami led off the third with a double and advanced to third on Benintendi's single. Murakami was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice grounder, but Colson Montgomery brought two runs home with a double down the right field line.

Valencia jumped on a hanging changeup from Kay and drove it over the left field wall to cut the White Sox's lead to 3-2 in the fourth.

Vargas doubled to lead off the fifth and Drew Sommers (0-3) replaced Melton one out later. Sommers struck out Braden Montgomery and Colson Montgomery, leaving Vargas stranded.

Corey Julks and Torres hit back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the inning to knot the score at 3 apiece.

Chicago regained the lead in the seventh. Randal Grichuk led off with a double and one out later, Sommers intentionally walked Vargas. Benintendi ruined that strategy with a single to left, driving in Grichuk.
