Mandatory Credit: Scott Wachter-Imagn Images Washington Wizards forward Cam Whitmore will be sidelined indefinitely after being diagnosed with upper-extremity deep vein thrombosis, the team announced Tuesday.
Whitmore was evaluated after missing two recent games with right shoulder soreness. He last played Dec. 4 in a 146-101 loss to the Boston Celtics.
According to the Mayo Clinic, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot (thrombus) forms in one or more of the deep veins in the body.
The Wizards said they will update his status when appropriate while monitoring his progress and recovery.
Whitmore came to the Wizards in July as part of a three-team trade in which Washington acquired guard CJ McCollum, center/forward Kelly Olynyk and Whitmore from the New Orleans Pelicans in exchange for guard Jordan Poole, forward Saddiq Bay and the draft rights to guard Micah Peavy, along with sending two second-round draft picks to the Houston Rockets.
Washington also received the Warriors' second-round pick in 2027 via the Chicago Bulls in the trade. The second-round picks the Wizards sent to the Rockets will be in 2026 (via the Bulls) and 2029 (via the Sacramento Kings).
The 21-year-old Whitmore averaged 9.2 points and 2.8 rebounds in 16.9 minutes through 21 games this season.
He was selected by the Rockets with the 20th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. As a rookie, he flashed promise, averaging 12.3 points and 3.8 rebounds in only 18.7 minutes per game. In addition, he shot 35.9 percent from three-point range.
In his second season, Whitmore saw a slight minute reduction due to Houston's crowded depth chart; he averaged 9.4 points and 3.0 rebounds in 16.2 minutes per game.
