World No. 1 Jannik Sinner (knee) withdraws from Cincinnati Open

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner withdrew from the Cincinnati Open on Sunday because of a lingering right knee issue.

"After consulting with my doctors and my team, I have to announce that I need to withdraw from the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati," Sinner said in a statement released by the tournament. "My right knee has been bothering me and even though we have been working hard with my medical team, I have to accept that I'm not ready to compete yet."

The 24-year-old also withdrew from the National Bank Open in Toronto and has not competed since Wimbledon, where he defeated Alexander Zverev to collect his fifth Grand Slam championship. His attention now turns to being healthy for the U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 30.

Sinner won Cincinnati in 2024 and owns a 12-4 career record at the tournament. He had enjoyed a dominant run at the Masters 1000 level earlier this season, winning the first five events he entered and completing the Career Golden Masters with his title in Rome.

His absence leaves Cincinnati without either of the world's top two players. No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz withdrew earlier this week as he continues to recover from the wrist injury that has kept him out since April. Alcaraz beat Sinner in last year's Cincinnati title match.

Zverev and Novak Djokovic are among the leading players remaining in the field. Djokovic won the title in 2018, 2020 and 2023 and Zverev prevailed in 2021.
