WTA roundup: No. 3 seed Elise Mertens upset in Netherlands

Elena-Gabriela Ruse of Romania saved 8 of 9 break points and knocked off No. 3 seed Elise Mertens of Belgium 6-3, 6-3 Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals at the Libema Open in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.

The only seeded player to advance Thursday was Czech No. 8 Barbora Krejcikova, a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Belgium's Hanne Vandewinkel. Austria's Anastasia Potapova, the fifth seed, retired due to illness down 6-1, 2-0 to Turkey's Zeynep Sonmez.

Robin Montgomery, an American ranked No. 484 in the world, took down Belgium's Greet Minnen 6-4, 7-6 (4), winning 34 of 46 first-service points (73.9%). Poland's Magda Linette and Ukraine's Daria Snigur also moved on to the quarters.


HSBC Championships

All matches at the WTA 500 event were rained out Thursday at London.

No. 1 seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan still needs to play Germany's Tatjana Maria in the Round of 16. That match will kick off Friday's slate, while No. 2 seed Amanda Anisimova and No. 6 seed Iva Jovic are scheduled to play in an all-American quarterfinal clash.
